About Elemi (Canarium luzonicum) Essential Oil

Elemi has a spicy, incense-like scent that is soft and somewhat balsamic. As a member of the same botanical family as frankincense and myrrh. Elemi exudes an exotic, fragrant resin when its leaves are sprouting. The very pale-yellow colored resin of Elemi from Young Living is artfully steam distilled.

Elemi has been used traditionally in Europe for the skin. Elemi is highly regarded for reducing the look of fine lines and wrinkles, skin support, and for soothing muscles after exercise.

Elemi can be best described by comparing it to a slight dill pickle with earthy and citrus notes.  It is surprisingly fresh and clean and not as tart as one would expect.

Aromatically, Elemi can give users a feeling of peace due to its grounding attributes. It can also be used topically on minor wounds and cuts, heavy perspiration, and it may be useful topically on the chest or diffused for the reduction of minor mucous.

Elemi is known as the “Poor Man’s Frankincense.” While it does not typically have the exact same power-house medicinal benefits as Frankincense (Boswellia carterii or Boswellia sacra) Elemi does seem to provide the skin with at least comparable benefits at a much reduced cost. Hence Elemi could be a terrific alternative to Frankincense in your homemade beauty, home spa and OTC replacement recipes.
